The race to be Oregon's next governor heats up this week when two leading candidates face off at the City Club of Portland's Friday Forum.

Former state Treasurer Jim Hill and Lane County Commissioner Pete Sorenson, both Democrats, will address the City Club from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Friday,March 17,in the Governor Hotel, 614 S.W. Park Ave.Gov.Ted Kulongoski was invited to participate, but declined.

Immediately preceding the Friday Forum candidates' debate, City Club members will discuss its recently commissioned report, "The Early Years: A City Club Report on the Care and Education of Children from Birth to Age Five", starting at 11:45 a.m.

In last month's State of theState address, Kulongoski ripped into factions within his own party, calling them a "disparate series of interest groups."

In an effort to better understand the issues at play within the Democratic gubernatorial primary, Hill and Pete Sorenson will appear before political consultant/moderator Liz Kaufman to explain where their positions differ and what they see for the future of Oregon.

Luncheon tickets are $16 for City Club members, $20 for nonmembers. Coffee/tea tickets are $5 at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. General seating is free for members, $5 for nonmembers.
