Seattle Library Celebrates "We Are Change"

The Seattle Public Library celebrates February with "Black History Live: We Are Change" from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 at the South Park Community Center, 8319 Eighth Ave. S.
The program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Free parking is available in the Community Center parking lot.
The program will explore positive and contemporary relationships between Black and African culture and Europe, Asia, and the Americas. It will feature spoken word and hip-hop performances by Geneiva Arunga, Razpy & the Vigilantes and M. Famous.
Wyking Allah, founder of the Seattle Hip-Hop Youth Council and chief executive officer of Remix Marketing and Communications, will give an audio/visual presentation.

Festival Sundiata Celebrates African-American Heritage

Traditional drumming and dance set the rhythmic tone for a weekend filled with live entertainment as Festival Sundiata celebrates African-American heritage on Feb. 14 - 16, from noon to 8 p.m. in Fisher Pavilion and Center House at Seattle Center, with an art opening on Feb. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.
African heritage is brought to life through dance, gospel, jazz, neo-soul, hip-hop and an African "Ujamaa" marketplace. Special activities in 2009 include: an interactive African Children's Village, Gospel Showcase, Smokin' Black Chefs of the Northwest and the Black Palette Art Exhibit in Northwest Gallery, 3rd Floor of Center House.
The festival is named for King Sundiata, the legendary 13th century West African Mansa "king of kings" of the Mali Empire.

Thirteen.org features 'Broadcasting While Black'

In honor of Black History Month, Thirteen.org has developed a new web project titled "Broadcasting While Black." Throughout the month of February, Thirteen.org will feature a series of articles and archival videos focusing on early WNET Black-produced programs, like "Soul!" (1968-1973), episodes of "Black Journal" and "Inside Bed Stuy," which aired for 2 seasons from 1969-1971 and was the first program of its kind to revamp the image of Bed Stuy in the 70s -- not as a crime-ridden Black ghetto but a place of community.

Civil Rights Digital Library

The Civil Rights Digital Library created by the University of Georgia in Athens gathers together many of the nation's civil rights collections through its ambitious Web portal -- http://crdl.usg.edu/voci/go/crdl/home/ -- while the Crossroads to Freedom Digital Library – www.crossroadstofreedom.org -- at Rhodes College, Memphis, Tennessee, uses its hometown collections to stimulate a community conversation on the impact of the civil rights movement on Memphians. The projects demonstrate how digital libraries can preserve and extend access to important historical collections and serve as a valuable resource for teaching, learning, research, and community engagement.

NAACP Membership Event

The Seattle NAACP is holding their next general membership meeting on Monday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Urban League Building on 14^th and Yesler. There are events coming up and the NAACP is looking for volunteers and committee members.
